Minds Alive Wellness Centre, Durban, South Africa (2017): In November 2017, Canadian citizen Milos Martinovic sought treatment for his addiction to opiates and benzodiazepines at the Minds Alive Wellness Centre in Durban, operated by dentist Anwar Mohamed Jeewa. Despite Jeewa’s awareness that ibogaine should not be used to treat benzodiazepine addiction, he administered the substance to Martinovic, who was also self-medicating with Xanax. Martinovic suffered a cardiac arrest and died during the treatment.
